Day 1 - I guess I have to start somewhere

Recently I had an epiphany - my self image is in the crapper and I really need to start working out, but with no motivation it was hard to get started. I'm hoping now that by going public it will spark me to keep up with exercising. =)

So I guess I should start with the basics:

Height: 5'8" 3/4
Weight: I hover around 161
B.M.I.: 23... some sites that's healthy, some sites that's "obese"

So why start exercising after 12 years of avoiding it? Honestly things are getting a little squishy and I'm not loving it. I don't think I'm fat by any means, and I don't want to focus solely on weight loss or my pant size - I just want to be healthier and getting off my butt seems like the best place to start.

Day 1 went as well as to be expected. I got up an hour early and ended up on the treadmill for about 1/2 an hour. I'm proud that I did it but lemme tell you - I felt like crap afterwards, plus I suffer from what I like to call "tomato face" - damn my Irish heritage! I may have to move the treadmill into a room with a tv - I notice that I tend to stare at the clock if I don't distract myself.

I think my big hurdle is how to make exercise interesting -- I can't join a gym at the moment so classes are out. If any one has any ideas please let me know!

I guess we'll see how tommorrow goes =)

  2. I'm super proud of you!

I suggest a subscription to Shape. I think it's the best, most women friendly health mag on the market. In lieu of this, you could just steal your little sister's copies and use the treadmill workouts that they set to music. I'll send one to you in the mail tomorrow!

I find I'm far more motivated when I have a goal - my first goal on Jan 1 was to run a mile - just one mile - by the end of the year. Then a friend challenged me to run the 5K for a local scholarship fund. (Yes, I paid for the privilege to get up at 6 a.m. and run 3 miles in the rain on Saturday morning!)

OK, last thing (this isn't MY blog afterall....) Do you have any trails around Raleigh? Dog friendly parks? Take 'em out for a long hike/walk on the weekend. That's more interesting than a treadmill!

  4. You are NOT obese, dear. Not. And I have to say that because we are almost exactly the same size. ;)

I hate the treadmill too. I have to pretend I'm Buffy the Vampire Slayer chasing down some serious evil. But it's still kind of boring. Good music or a fun podcast helps things along. If you want to do interval training on a trail outside, let me know. I found a neat podcast that switches the music for walk/run so you don't have to keep checking your stopwatch. I'll send you a link.
